Sources of bank funding in Poland – chosen problems

Abstract
Banks are institutions, whose choice of funding structure has an especially profound influence on their solvency, liquidity and profitability. It is specific for banks’ business model that the majority of their liabilities stem from their operating activity. The analysis of funding structure of banks operating in Poland described in this article shows, that in the period 2008-2012 their solvency as measured by capital adequacy ratio and Tier 1 capital adequacy ratio improved. On the other hand, the term and currency mismatch of banks’ assets and liabilities is a significant problem. The changes in funding structure proposed in this article comprise increasing the share of long term financing, inter alia by bond issuance. It would improve the stability of the banking sector, but at the expense of deteriorating profitability.
