Journal Title: International Journal of Medical Science and Diagnosis Research (IJMSDR) - Year 2017, Vol 1, Issue 5
Abstract
OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of BPH is about 50% by 60 years of age and is as high as 90% by age of 85 years. Present study was aimed to evaluate the effects of atorvastatin in elderly male patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia accompanied by metabolic syndrome. METHODS: A Hospital based prospective, double blinded, randomized controlled trial study was conducted. Patients aged 50 - 80 year attending urology and other OPDs were diagnosed as BPH by USG accompanied by metabolic syndrome, but with normal PSA levels were included in this study. A total of 438 patients were taken for study purpose and were assigned randomly into 2 groups. One group was given 20 mg of atorvastatin daily for 12 months, and the other groups was given placebo treatment for 12 months. Serum lipids, prostate-specific antigen, prostate volume (PV) and the international prostate symptom score (IPSS) were tested before and after the treatment. RESULTS: After 12 months of treatment, the levels of serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were decreased, serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol was increased significantly in the patients after treatments in group A but not in group B. PV,PSA and IPSS were reduced significantly in group A but not in group B . CONCLUSION: In present study Atorvastatin use was found to significantly reduce PSA levels, P V and IPSS in patients with BPH. KEYWORDS: BPH, METABOLIC SYNDROME, ATORVASTATIN
