Abstract

Humor as an everyday phenomenon is increasingly becoming a part of the context of intercultural communication. It is also a vehicle for mass entertainment, as television nowadays offers a wide variety of entertaining programs, both feature films and TV series. Translators often face the task of having to translate seemingly untranslatable humor, while not reducing the meaning effect, which invariably tests their capability for finding creative solutions. According to the significant number of scientific papers, we consider the problem in the adequate translation of the humor in TV series to be relevant for the present-day linguistics. The object-matter of the research is American humor in the TV series. The subject- matter are ways to achieve comic effect translating TV series. The research aim is to indicate peculiarities of translation American comic series into Ukrainian. In order to achieve this aim, the following objectives have been set forth. First, we defined the specificity of humor in the serial “ALF”, second we determined the difficulty in the humor reproduction, third identified features of TV series voice-over into Ukrainian. The analysis of the texts and their translations resulted that American humor is a kind of symbiosis: humor and laugh always go along with despair, resentment, skepticism. The main challenges in perceiving and translating humor are the problem of adequacy and sociocultural differences. The translator needs to be able to know at least something about the cultures involved in the translation in order understand the original and be able to reproduce it. In analysis, we have determined that it is necessary to take into account the national character of humor because in different societies, the same thing can cause different reactions, leading to inadequate reproduction units of the source language to the target language.
