Specifics of compositional design of English abstracts in the humanities

Abstract

Over the past few years linguists consider the discourse of an abstract as a constituent or an element of the megadiscourse of a research paper article. The abstract is characterized by its specific rhetorical organization and functional characteristics. The aim of the given article is to explore the abstract as a genre of academic discourse within its rhetorical organization. The object of the research is English academic discourse represented by the genre of a research paper abstract. The subject of the present study is the author’s implementation of certain communicative strategies. In order to reach our goal, we set such objectives as to describe and analyze the specifics of rhetorical moves and their submoves in research paper abstracts. This article analyzes rhetorical moves in 50 abstracts in social work published in the 2015–2017 period. A proposed pattern for research article abstracts suggested by M. Santos has been selected as the analytical basis. At the macro-level we conducted the analysis of the organization of rhetorical structure of abstracts, while at the micro-level we showed moves’ accordance with the intentions and purposes of the author. The data show that each separate move is the transference and depiction of the author’s intentions regarding the current state of science development. Moreover, ways of aims expression, main features, methodology of the research as well as summarizing the results and discussing the research have been examined. The results of the research suggest that the authors are trying to convey the content of their research paper article in a clear and concise way with the help of an abstract, so they follow precise moves and submoves of its writing rules. Summarizing the results of our analysis, it should be noted that, there lies a great potential implying the discovery of new knowledge in the research area of discourse of an abstract. The obtained data contain pedagogical implications for practical analysis of the rhetorical design of abstracts.
