Speed and tactical solutions in marathon races
Journal Title: Rozprawy Naukowe Akademii Wychowania Fizycznego we Wrocławiu - Year 2007, Vol 25, Issue 1
Abstract
The tactics of the marathon race can be described by two indexes calculated from the attained speed: the index of speed deviation and the index of endurance. In this study we characterised the racing tactics in the world top marathon runners by the analysis of the indexes. The data was taken from participants in marathon runs in World Championships in Edmonton, 2001, Olympic Games in Athens, 2004, Boston, 2002, and Berlin 2002. In each run, the results of 50 best female runners were considered. The runners were further divided into three subgroups in respect of their results in the marathon. It allowed us to compare the way of running the race between the best ones and the remaining participants, and point out benefits following out of the tactics of the winners. It was found out that on more difficult routes (hilly ones), the fluctuations in speed were negligible, while on plain routes, where it was easier to retain high speed, the sprinters were more actively fighting to score a better position in the run as well as a better time on the finish line. Higher values of the endurance index recorded during the races on routes which were steep or with a long uphill run occurring in the second part of the race, indicate that higher speed is exceeded in the second part of the distance. On plain routes (Berlin) or sloping down (Boston), the runners attain lower values of the endurance index which means that the level of speed in both parts of the distance is steady. One may therefore conclude that easier routes require an active fight (high speed) from the very beginning and a steady pace run. Such a racing tactics is most effective, yet demands excellent endurance preparation to continue high speed throughout the whole race.
