Spoil Heaps – A New Chance, Not Only for Trees
Journal Title: Annals of WULS, Forestry and Wood Technology; Zeszyty naukowe SGGW - Year 2015, Vol 92, Issue
Abstract
The current situation in Czech agriculture gives wide possibilities for cultivation of so-called fuel wood species. The wooden biomass serving for obtaining of wood chip is cultivated on the spoil heaps. Mainly the fast-growing fuel wood species are utilized for this purpose. Wood chip is suitable alternative for the companies, which are considering more environment-friendly and cheaper mthods of heating or electricity production. Wood chip is produced from the waste remaining after the forest logging or in the wood-processing plants. Wood chip may also be obtained from the fuel wood species cultivated especially for this purpose. This paper deals with the quality analysis of birch chip obtained in the area of Northern Bohemia (the quarry Lom Barbora). The following parameters were the quality indices for the wood chip obtained in this area: chip dimensions and moisture fraction in the chip. Based on experiments, we found the birch chip moisture equal to 46.664% The birch chip sieve analysis has proven that most of the chips are up to 10 mm.
