Abstract

FAILED ATTEMPT OF SZADEK INDUSTRIALIZATION IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY The subject of analysis is an unknown, never mentioned in Polish historiography before, document released by the Szadek authorities in 1837. The above mentioned source document constituted an appeal directed at the manufacturers to make them come and settle in the town. The appeal contained a detailed description of the town and the list of facilities for the potential newcomers for whom the authorities planned to create a „New Town”. Unfortunately the initiative was undertaken too late. Nearby at that time there were several industrial towns formerly created such as Zduńska Wola, Pabianice and Lodz where the first factories were built in the second half of the 19th century. The Szadek authorities offered the allowances and privileges typical for the earlier period of manufactures’ development, hence they were not attractive for the newcomers. Moreover Szadek was situated far from the communication trails which also contributed to the fact that the industry in the town have not developed.
