Abstract
Grzegorz Tomczak THE FARM NOBLES FROM ŁĘCZYCA REGION – DĄBROWSCY FROM KURZYJAMA BETWEEN 17TH AND 19TH CENTURY Petty nobility was a part of the noble men who owned at most one fourth of a village, they farmed their land on their own and had no serving peasants. Their social and economical standing was rather low. Owing to their position, the noble men who were playfully referred to as “grey dressed nobility”, had an impeded access to high offices and positions. They hardly worked their way up their career ladder, both in politics and military service. This article describes the history of the Dąbrowski nobility from Łęczyca Land, depicted by the example of one of the family of this name which settled and inhabited the village of Kurzyjama in the former poviat and province of Łęczyca in the middle of the 17th Century until the middle of the 19th Century. The family of Dąbrowski from Kurzyjama was a partial owner of the land they farmed on their own and represented the poorer part of the Łęczyca nobility but at the same time they were neither awarded with any significant offices positions nor received any considerable fortunes. Among those who seemed to succeed was Maciej Dąbrowski, the insurgent of the November Uprising who made a name for himself owing to his patriotic activities, vivid life as well as military career he completed in exile following the defeat of the uprising in 1831. This article represents a contribution to some further research on the Łęczyca minor gentry by taking into account the individual course of lives led by this family’s representatives.
