Abstract

Krzysztof Tomasz Witczak THREE INSURGENTS OF THE JANUARY UPRISING WENT ALLEGEDLY FROM THE BRZUSTÓWKA VILLAGE (NOW TOMASZÓW MAZOWIECKI). AN ATTEMPT AT VERIFYING THEIR BIOGRAPHIES ON THE BASIS OF THE ARCHIVAL DATA The article discusses biographical data of three insurgents, who took part in the January Uprising (years 1863–1864), namely: Daniel Mikołaj Kurtzweg (1833–after 1878), Adam Wajs (Weiss) (1842–1870) and Stanisław Wierzbicki (1829–after 1873). According to an earlier literature, they were born in Brzustówka, a village near Tomaszów Mazowiecki, or in Bocian, a part of Brzustówka with a tavern for raftsmen near the Pilica river. They are believed to have left their native village (Brzustówka or Bocian) to start their fight with the Tsarist Russian forces. Unfortunately, the archival data differ in the most important points: they were townsmen (born in the craftsmen families) and no peasants. Daniel Kurtzweg (son of a baker) was born in the town Tomaszów Mazowiecki, Adam Wajs (son of a draper) in the town Ujazd, Stanisław Wierzbicki (son of a shoemaker) in the town Wolbórz. Only Wajs lived in Tomaszów Mazowiecki at the beginning of 1863. He fought in Drewnowski’s unit. Kurtzweg and Wierzbicki were soldiers of the Tsarist Russian army, as well as veterans of the Crimean War (1853–1856). The former was a non-commissioned officer of the Warsaw Police Guard (унтер-офицер Варшавской полицейской стражи), the latter was a private (after a 1862 degradation) of the Modlin Fortress Regiment (рядовой новогеоргиевского крепостного полка). Kurtzweg escaped from Warsaw, taking part in the Polish 1863 Uprising with gen. Marian Langiewicz as a commander, Wierzbicki escaped from the Modlin Fortress and joined Jasiński’s detachment. After the January Uprising Wajs was imprisoned in Piotrków Trybunalski and later he lived under the police surveillance in Tomaszów Mazowiecki. Kurtzweg and Wierzbicki, who served earlier in the Tsarist army, received initially the death-penalty, but later they were sent to forced labour camps in Eastern Siberia (12 and 10 years of hard labour, respectively). Both were political deportees assigned to the construction of the Circumbaikal Highway (a road near the Baikal lake). Daniel Kurtzweg took part in the Polish Baikal Insurrection or Siberian Uprising (24–28 June 1866) and he received an additional sentence (one year of hard labour in the probationary section with the putting his hands and feet in chains).
