Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2011, Vol 24, Issue 5
Abstract
Life extension in relation to the progress of civilization increases the number of people in old age. Aging of population is associated with the occurrence large group of patients with coronary artery disease. Taking into account the current state of medical knowledge is necessary to use optimal pharmacological and the best method of revascularisation (percutaneous coronary intervention – PTCA or coronary artery bypass grafting – CABG). Many available diagnostic tests and clinical evaluation allows to make the right decision. Published results indicate that, on one hand revascularization procedures are associated with higher mortality, on the other hand significantly improves the quality of life in elderly patients. A decision regarding eligibility for treatment should be taken individually and also in accordance with the guidelines. There is a need to perform further randomized studies, the results of which would facilitate the selection of appropriate treatment. Old age is characterized by many differences in terms of both clinical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment. However management patterns based on societies guidelines in most are not different from those recommended to younger patients.
