Abstract
The article examines the history of testing development in the US in the twentieth century. The author stresses that the attitude towards testing in the United States changed depending on historical and political events. In certain periods the number of theoretical studies devoted to testing problems decreased, but the scope of practical application of testing continued to grow, despite some criticism.
