State and promising directions of handling the radioactive waste of nuclear power plants

Abstract

The problem of protecting the population and environment from radioactive waste generated under the design operation conditions of nuclear power plants is becoming more and more significant due to the steady increase in their volumes. At present, the only way of isolating radioactive waste is their storage or burial in depositories of different types. The construction of such depositories requires significant expenditures of funds and exclusion, up to eternal, of certain plots of land. Taking into account the international experience in this field, we propose an approach to the classification of radioactive waste in accordance with the types of their depositories.
