State anxiety and pErception of fatigue following rowing regatta
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2010, Vol 26, Issue 5
Abstract
Background. This study aims to examine state of anxiety (SA) and perception of fatigue (PF) among rowers during regatta (8 km) played at the beginning and in the end of rowing competitive season. Material and methods. 20 males and 20 females, national-level senior rovers participated on March and on October in a regatta on distance of 8 km. Using State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, anxiety levels were studied one hour prior to races (SA1) and 5 minutes following exertion (SA2). Post-exertion (+5 min) perception of fatigue (PF) was rated by means a visual analog scale. Results. No significant differences were fund in means of SA1 and SA2 in both sexes examined on March and October. No sex-related differences occurred in SA1 and SA2, and PF in both terms. Analysis of individual SA responses to regatta highlighted association between SA1 and ΔSA in males and females. Each competitor was assigned to the pattern L (of low pre-effort anxiety) when his/her SA1≤SA2, and to the pastern H (of high pre-effort anxiety) when his/her SA1>SA2. As a lack of individual difference between SA1 and SA2 and we assumed criteria ΔSA≤2, whereas existence of individual difference, when ΔSA>2. Significant differences between mean SA1 and mean SA2 were found for subgroups L and H in both sexes. Subgroups L demonstrated rise of SA or lack of change, while SA in subgroups H SA dropped after regatta. Comparing the affective (SA) and perceptual (PF) responses to regatta played on spring and autumn, the higher reproducibility of these variables were found among males. Conclusions. The response of SA (ΔSA) strongly depends on SA1. Females exhibited the higher within-subject variability of ΔSA and ΔPF.

The ADRB2 (beta2-adrenergic receptor, locus 5q 31-33) gene encodes a β2-adrenergic receptor (β2-adrenergic receptor, ADRB2). Studies have shown that polymorphisms in the ADRB2 gene (e.g. Arg16Gly) correlate with increase...
