Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2010, Vol 26, Issue 1

Abstract

Background. The athletes who successfully perform in various sports disciplines are charac-terized by a remarkable body constitution, depending on the requirements of a specific discipline or event. The goal of the study was to determine morphologic characteristics of badminton play-ers and a model body constitution for highly qualified representatives of this discipline.Materiał and methods. Measurements were performed in a cohort of9 highest ranked Po-lish competitors, National Team Representatives aged 19-26 years. Sheldon's method of soma-tic type eyaluation was applied after being modified by Heath and Carter. Body composition was evaluated using a professional Tanita BC- 418 MA analyser (Japan).Results. The measurement results showed that the highest ranked badminton players were characterised by a substantial body height (H) 184.63±6.01 cm, a proportionally large body mass (M) 80.71±9.05 kg and BMI of 23.60±1.96 kg/m2. The proportions of different com-ponents of endomorphy, mesomorphy and ectomorphy were similar with a slight preyalence of the first two somatotypes over the third one. It was concluded that Polish badminton players were characterised by a Iow percentage of fat that constituted about 9.6% of body mass.Conclusions. The values of body mass, body height and BMI turned out to be higher com-pared to the values of most of the competitors from other countries, and their somatotype (3.0:3.0:2.5) determined as central, did not show a definite preyalence of any of its components. Also the percentage of adipose tissue was Iow.
