THE BODY POSTURE IN YOUNG ATHLETES COMPARED TO THEIR PEERS

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2009, Vol 25, Issue 2

Abstract

Background. A correct body posture is essential to assure a proper development. The aim of this study was to estimate the body posture of young athletes compared to their non- training peers. Material and methods. The research was carried out among 21 boys and 33 girls, who were the students of the secondary school of the athletic-oriented classes (jogging). The age of the sample was 14-16 years. The control group consisted of 33 girls and 36 boys from the same age group. The posture was assessed using a photogrammetric method based on the moiré technique. The analysis considered the shape of the spine and the position of different body parts (shoulders, scapulas, pelvis and waist arrangement). Results. The research showed multiple asymmetries among the youth athletes. Generally, there were deviations of the line course of the spinous processes, the trunk, as well as asymmetry of waist triangles. The anteroposterior spine curvatures were often more correct in youth athletes compared to their non-training peers. Conclusions. The posture of youth athletes is often asymmetrical with defects in the sagittal plane. Physical education teachers and coaches should pay particular attention to the posture of their students and they should encourage them to do exercises developing the habit of maintaining a correct posture.
