Statins For The Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis
Journal Title: Journal of Neurological Sciences-Turkish - Year 2005, Vol 22, Issue 2
Abstract
The limited effectiveness, adverse events as well as expensiveness of approved treatments for multiple sclerosis (MS) emphasize the need for the development of new therapies. Recent data suggest that statins, 3-hydroxy-3 methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors, may be beneficial in the treatment of inflammatory diseases. It has shown that pleitropic effects of statins on inflammation are extend beyond their effects on serum cholesterol levels. Statins are able to ameliorate or even prevent disease expression in several experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, an animal model for MS. Furthermore in vitro studies with human peripheral blood lymphocytes revealed that simvastatin, lovastatin and mevastatin exerted strong anti-inflammatory properties comparable to those approved therapies. We integrated mainly experimental data into limited clinical data. Although most in vitro studies have been on the favor of statins, it is still not clear whether clinical data will correspond these conclusions.
