STEPPEOLOGY AS AN INTERDISCIPLINARY TREND IN SCIENCE
Journal Title: Вісник Одеського національного університету. Географічні та геологічні науки - Year 2017, Vol 22, Issue 2
Abstract
Problem Statement and Purpose. In the article, the steppes of Ukraine are considered as a historical, geopolitical, socio-economic, landscape-soil and biotic categories, which makes it possible to propose an interdisciplinary trend in scientific thought – Steppeology when exploring this unique geographical area. The contribution of different scientists who studied the component composition of steppe ecosystems to the formation of an integrated approach to the study of such a geographical phenomenon as the Eurasian steppes is investigated. Data & Methods. When investigating this problem, published materials of scientists of different profiles that examined the component composition of steppe ecosystems were studied. Attention was drawn to the complexity of the approaches, the essence of which is that the Euro-Asian steppes are considered as a unique system, as an association of historical, geopolitical, socio-economic processes on the background of geographical, landscape-soil and biotic features of the steppe. Accordingly, source studies, historical-geographical, socio-economic and ecological methods were used. Results. It is emphasized that the steppe is the space in which people live, this is the space where formed, acted and created through the history different communities and ethnic groups, which were closely associated with certain landscapes that contributed to the formation of certain cultural traditions and civilizations: agricultural, nomadic, etc. The closest to understanding Steppeology as a separate science was the Ukrainian geographer Vladimir Ogonovsky in his doctoral thesis «Eastern European Steppes,» Georgy Vernadsky, who taught a course of lectures «Steppeology» at the Yale university (USA) in the first half of the twentieth century, as well as L. N. Gumilev in his famous works about the Great Steppe.
