Strategic Management of Women-Owned Business Ventures in the Artisan Sector, an Industry Prioritized in the Competitive Roadmap for the Department of Sucre

Journal Title: Revista CEA - Year 2023, Vol 9, Issue 21

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to describe the current state of women-owned business ventures in the artisan sector, an industry prioritized in the Competitive Roadmap for the Department of Sucre. Design/methodology: This study adopted a mixed approach that was qualitative (semi-structured interviews) as well as quantitative (a survey composed of five Likert scale questions). The data were collected between July and October 2021 and analyzed using descriptive statistics and narrative analysis. The population comprised a group of female owners of artisan microenterprises located in five municipalities in the Department of Sucre, Colombia, i.e., Morroa, Sampúes, San Onofre, and Sincelejo. Findings: The results show that women-owned business ventures face internal and external difficulties that limit their organizational growth. In addition, due to current challenges and changes in corporate growth and development, these women need to establish a diagnosis of their organizational processes, human talent, production, sales, services, and kind of markets. They should do so to identify their Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats and determine and implement strategies that boost their growth and improve their competitiveness. Conclusions: Based on this analysis, it can be concluded that women-owned artisan business ventures need to receive organizational support and draw attention to the work female artisans do in the business world. Originality: This study is different from others on this topic because it examines the role of the female artisan as an entrepreneur. Furthermore, it describes the reality of the artisan sector, which—despite being at a disadvantage compared to other sectors—contributes to corporate, economic, and social development in the Department of Sucre, especially to the sustainability of cultural traditions.
