STRATEGIC USE OF ECONOMIC POWER: GEOECONOMICS

Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 52

Abstract

Geoeconomics, a new discipline in social sciences, has become the basic concept of political analysis with the increasing interest in interaction between international trade and strategy. Although the concept of geoeconomics used in the literature since 1990s has been tried to be embodied in the perspective of disciplines of International Relations, Geography, Economics, Geopolitics, History and Business Administration, it seems that it is abstract or differs according to the point of view of the researchers. This article examines the views of Luttwak in the post-Cold War era that the influence of military power on world affairs has diminished and lost importance. Today, economic power has taken its place in the geoeconomic climate of conflict. In this context, in today's global liberal order, economic power has gained more importance than military power. Although strategic use and importance of geoeconomic power increase, we cannot say that conventional military power has lost its significance and is in the past. In this context, we consider that geoeconomics should not be seen as a continuation of geopolitics, but rather that both should be seen as two different ideal perspectives of geostrategia.
