ÜMÎDÎ, A POET TRYING TO RE-CREATE BÂKÎ’S POETRY, AND HIS PARALLEL POEMS TO BÂKÎ

Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2015, Vol 8, Issue 38

Abstract

Bâkî and Ümîdî are two poets from İstanbul, who lived in the same period, in the same century. There exists some information in poetry anthologies regarding the literary connections between these two poets. All the information found in the anthologies has the common point that Ümîdî is a poet imitating Bâkî. This study deals with the literary connections between Ümîdî and Bâkî in terms of parallel poetry in the light of the information provided by the poetry anthologies. The parallel poems of Ümîdî, who never refers to Bâkî or indicates that he has written parallel poems to Bâkî in his poetry, are analysed in terms of parallel poetry tradition, and the study also attempts to reveal in what ways and to what extent Ümîdî was influenced by Bâkî. Parallel Poetry (Tr. Nazire,) is a poetic practice that existed for a long time in the poetic tradition of Ottoman Divan Literature. It was preferred by all poets to different extents because of its role in the training of young poets and its function of developing poets’ competencies in poetry and language. In this regard, Ümîdî wrote parallel poems to Bâkî’s eighty-one poems. In this study, the parallel poems are compared in terms of their internal and external structures. Within this comparison lies an attempt to suggest what qualities make a poem parallel particularly through a different classification in the internal structure. The study is mainly composed of three chapters. The introduction chapter gives information about parallel poetry and its functions. Besides, to what extent can a parallel poem be related with the original one is explained. The second chapter compares Ümîdî’s parallel poems with Bâkî’s poems in terms of external structure. Third chapter analyzes the poems in terms of internal structure, fiction, imagination and articulation. In this chapter, the poems are compared through a new kind of classification. An overall analysis is done at the end of the study.
