Strategies and Tactics of the Role Asymmetry in the Personages’ Speech Based on British Drama

Abstract

The article deals with the strategies and tactics that reflect role asymmetry in the personages’ speech in British drama of the 20th century. The drama is researched as a complex unity which is built and functions according to its own laws. The contemporary approaches to the dramatic text analysis including both traditional and cognitive-discourse are taken into account. The perspectives of linguistic analysis of strategies and tactics used in cases of role asymmetry in social interaction are singled out. The attribution of the role asymmetry in social interaction to speech strategies and tactics which express speaker's both positive and negative emotions which establish and maintain the contact is discussed. Aim, pragmatic value and contents of role asymmetry in social interaction are described. The speech act theory and role theory are employed to analyze the role asymmetry in social interaction. The specific character of the role asymmetry in social interaction realization in the personages’ speech based on the communicative-pragmatic approach is specified with the help of the component and contextual analyses. The connection of role asymmetry in social interaction with drama theory and speech act theory is singled out. The research proves that the role asymmetry in social interaction widely occurs in British drama texts and employs both cooperation and confrontation strategies, which presupposes appropriate tactics.
