STUDENT MIGRATION AS A NEW TYPE OF MIGRATION, A SOCIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS UPON THE RELATION OF IDENTITY AND RELIGIOUSNESS

Abstract

The fact of migration, which has an old past inasmuch as history of humanity, has gained new forms, its’ speed and variety have increased. Migration movements have generally been handled with the fact of labor migration, however; the fact of increasing student migrations from underdeveloped and developing countries to developed countries recently, is in a situation affecting individual and social changes. Being not much research about the fact of student migration entering into sociological literature recently, supports the importance of this study. This study aims to determine and analyze sociologically socio-cultural and religious changes of students called as Erasmus generation who go from Turkey to European countries most of whom are Christian in the framework of Erasmus exchange program. Putting forward the relationship of students, who have never gone abroad before, with a new religion, culture and social structure and how they are affected in this relationship is the main purpose of this study. The basic data source of the study is the interviews done with students receiving education in Karamanoglu Mehmetbey University in different faculties and colleges between 2012-2015 years before they went and after they came back. In the interviews, an interview form constituting fifteen open-ended questions was carried out. When the interview results are evaluated, it is understood that the students have had a lot of religious, mental and behavioral change via Erasmus abroad experience.
