THE ROLE OF INTERMEDIARIES IN TRANSLATION PRODUCTION NETWORKS

Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 54

Abstract

Today in translation projects various actors with different roles are brought together to establish teams. Teams are expected to work collaboratively with a shared objective and produce a product that would meet the expectations of the initiator. These teams work as a part of a production network consisting of companies connected to each other due to their economic benefits. The expectation of initiator is not always met due to various factors. In this study, the role of intermediary, which is one of the factors, was examined. Intermediary is used to indicate the actor that provides work, information and communication flow between initiator and translator. Empirical data was used to discuss how translators and translation products would be affected if intermediary failed to fulfill his duties and responsibilities. Sources of data were the records of interviews made with two freelance translators between 2011 and 2012, quotations from the translators interviewed by Kristiina Abdallah and published in the article titled “Translators’ Agency in Production Networks”, and a dialogue section taken on 8 November 2017 from the Facebook Group Freelance Translators.
