STUDIES ON EHRLICHIA CANIS INFECTION ON DIFFERENT BREEDS OF DOGS IN JOS AND BUKURU METROPOLIS OF PLATEAU STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

Studies on the prevalence of Ehrlichia canis infection was carried out in two metropolis of two Local Government Areas (Jos-South and Jos -North) of Plateau State, Nigeria. Blood samples were collected from 282 dogs and thin blood smear was made and stained with Wright's stain. Prepared slides were examined under the Light Microscope using oil immersion lens for morulae stages of Ehrlichia canis parasite. The result shows that of the 282 dogs and screened for Ehrlichia canis, 40 (14.2%) were positive while 242 (85.8%) were negative. A further breakdown of results showed that Dogs less than six months old (n=164) recorded 9.8% infection rate, Dogs between six to twelve months (n=32) had high infection rate of 25.0%, while Dogs above twelve months old (n=16) recorded a total of 18.6% infection. The rate of infection amongst sex was analyzed and the result revealed that male Dogs (n=144) recorded 18.9% infection while female Dogs (n=138) recorded 10.1% infection. There was insignificant difference in the rate of infection amongst sex of Dogs (P>0.05). Analysis showed that Ehrlichia canis was more prevalent among Local breeds of the male Dogs (20.2%) than the exotic breeds (P<0.05). Rhipicephalus sanguineus tick was recovered and incriminated as the transmitting vector of Ehrlichia canis in dogs in the study areas. This study also highlights on some important socioeconomic factors and control measures of the disease.
