Studies on the „Curve of SPEE“

Abstract
This is a report on a cephalometric analysis based on the assumption of a circular projection of the Curve of SPEE on the head plate. The center-point of this circle is called the “Centro-Masticale” and represents in this analysis the hypothetical center of the masticatory forces within the stomato-gnathic system, three more points are selected to represent the maxilla, the mandible, and the TM-joint. The radius of the Curve of SPEE through the inner chin-point is called the “Stress-Axis” of the occlusion and used as an indicator for existing correlations within the stomato-gnathic system. The inclinations of the longitudinal dental axes are studied with regards to this stress-axis. The region of the apex of the first upper bicuspid is used as reference point for the maxilla. A correlative classification of malocclusions can be achieved, if the position of the stress-axis referred to point “apicale” is used as a criterion.
