Studies that can be Performed for Enhancing Scientific Literacy in Schools

Abstract

In this research, it is aimed to identify the studies that can be performed for enhancing scientific literacy. The universe of this research constitutes the 2 doctorate and 20 masters theses concluded between 2000-2022 with the subject of “Scientific Literacy” involved in the national thesis database of the HEC (Higher Education Council). In the research all universe has been reached and the theses have been analysed in accordance with the aim of the research. This research is a descriptive study that was carried out in the framework of qualitative research methodology. In collection of the data, documentary scanning was adopted that is involved in the qualitative research methodology. In the end of the analyses performed, suggestions was compiled for both teachers and the teaching programme and the course book with the aim of increasing scientific literacy. It is suggested that teachers, who form the most important pillar of the studies that can be realised for increasing the scientific literacy in the schools, should be provided with scientific literacy activities and related in service trainings, and that programmes related with these activities should be involved in the license education. In addition, it is suggested that themes of scientific literacy should be involved in all teaching programmes in adequate level, that teaching of science nature should be implemented in different grades, that students should take part in procedures of nature of science actively and that the teachers should take the subject of nature of science during their license education.
