Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2019, Vol 10, Issue 2
Abstract
Background: Abnormal uterine bleeding is a very common gynaecological condition which can affect a women’s physical, mental and social life. The aim of the study was to evaluate the histopathological patterns of endometrium in patients presenting with abnormal uterine bleeding.Materials and methods: This were a cross sectional study done at the Department of Pathology, SreeMookambika Institute of Medical Sciences on 172 patients who presented with abnormal uterine bleeding from January 2016 to August 2018. Data were entered in Microsoft Excel & analysis was done in the form of proportions & percentagesResults: Majority of the patients belonged to the peri –menopausal age group of 40- 49 years(52.32%).In 48 patients, a definite organic cause for abnormal uterine bleeding was found. The most common histopathological diagnosis irrespective of age group was proliferative endometrium seen in 62 (36.04%) patients. The incidence of endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial carcinoma in the present study were 6.3% and 4.65% respectively. Conclusion:Histomorphological study of the endometrium helps in identifying the cause for abnormal uterine bleeding, which helps in the proper management of the patient. Women presenting with peri menopausal and postmenopausal bleeding should be subjected to histopathological evaluation of the endometrium to rule out pre malignant and malignant lesions.
