Study of percentage of difference in dominant and nondominant hand grip strength in cricket players: A cross-sectional study

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Physiology - Year 2017, Vol 2, Issue 1

Abstract

Background: Hand grip strength has been an indicator for determining strength. Objectives: The purpose of study was to found out percentage of difference in dominant and nondominant hand grip strength in right handed and left handed dominant cricket players. Materials and Methods: Total 60 healthy cricket players, 30 right handed dominant and 30 left handed dominant (15-25 years), from district sport academy, regularly practicing from last 3 years at university level and who don’t have any abnormality of upper arm or any neurological problem, history of fracture of hand were included. Measurement of hand grip strength with help of Sahens hand grip digital dynamometer was done. Mean of three reading was taken as final reading. Unpaired test was applied for the comparison in dominant and nondominant hand grip strength in cricket players. Result: It was also found that, statistically there was highly significant difference observed in dominant and nondominant hand grip strength in cricket players. Bilateral HGS difference of right hand dominant players is 7.50% and Bilateral HGS difference of left hand dominant cricket players is 5.35% Conclusion: Proper training for maintaining hand grip strength will increase in hand grip strength. It will further lead to better strength and performance in cricket activities.
