STUDY OF THE MODULUS OF ELASTICITY AND THE MICROHARDNESS CHANGES OF NIKASIL COATINGS IN CYLINDER SLEEVES OF COMBUSTION ENGINES DUE TO WEAR

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2015, Vol 261, Issue 3

Abstract

Coatings on surfaces of internal combustion engine elements are commonly used to protect against excessive wear. One of them, frequently applied on sleeve surface of motorcycle engines, is made of Nicasil alloy. As presented by producers, these coatings are characterized by good tribological properties, in particular, high abrasive wear resistance. The design and optimization of the best technical solution and materials in a sleeve-piston friction pair are focused on the appropriate modulus of elasticity of the materials in contact. The changes in the Young's modulus of coatings during engine operation allow an assessment of its state of wear. The paper presents the study of elasticity changes of Nicasil coatings in terms of the loss in tribological properties, including scuffing resistance. The steady value of surface coatings elastic properties during the operation of friction pairs allows one to transfer variable and dynamic loads and to provide high resistance to high temperatures and heat flux changes. This article also presents the results of micromechanical tests: elasticity modulus and microhardness of Nicasil coatings in the initial state, worn, and seized surfaces.
