Abstract
In recent years, a shortage of teachers is increasingly reported in European scale. А number of studies showing that this trend will deepen in the next ten years. Bulgaria is no exception in this regard. The socio-demographic phenomenon of the lack of teachers for the system of pre-school and school education has led to the stabilization of the teaching profession and provoked increasing interest in it. Besides the high interest of the graduates, there is also an intensive orientation of specialists from other professional fields to university educational programs for obtaining a teacher's qualification. At present, the process is typical of university programs that prepare pre-school and primery-school teachers. However, intensive measures at the state level to attract personnel to the educational sphere are expected to include, in the near future, programs that prepare teachers for higher stages and levels of the education system. The greatest concern is the attraction of teachers in mathematical and natural sciences. The system now also has a shortage of such teachers. The outlined trends concern not only the motivation of future teachers to choose the teaching profession and their attitude to practice it realistically and sustainably, but also the quality of the teachers, coming into the system. Particularly relevant, this problem concerns students who study in so-called “wide profile” master's degree programs and postgraduate courses as they allow bachelors from other professional fields to acquire a teacher's qualification for a short time. The article presents the results of a study conducted among 162 students. They study in master's programs and postgraduate courses for acquiring the pre-school and primery-school teachers at two Bulgarian universities. The aim of the study is to identify the pulling and repulsive factors of choice and retention in the teaching profession. The quantitative and qualitative content analysis of factors makes it possible to draw the motives for choice and retention in the profession, to specify different demotivating factors, and to conditionally assess the professional suitability of those who choose the teaching profession at a later stage of their educational and professional development.
