Study of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders in Workers at a Construction Site

Abstract

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders are one of the most common problems in construction sites. the mainly causes due to work-related musculoskeletal disorders are: manually lifting, carrying, work stations inappropriate express something inappropriate, improper posture, repetitive movements, working time is long. These risk factors threatening the workers in construction activities. The present study aimed to assess the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders-caused by muscular work was performed in workers at a construction site. In this cross- sectional descriptive study, the prevalence of Work-related musculoskeletal disorders-in 199 construction workers at a construction site in 1390 at PARAND city, after identifying work stations and work tasks in construction workplaces, Nordic and demographics questionnaires were used for the determination of prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders and individual characteristics, respectively. To determine the factors affecting the incidence of musculoskeletal disorders, a simple job analysis was conducted for various professions and most important factor was determined for each job. After all, the obtained data were analyzed using statistical methods including: t-test, and chi-square and fisher’s exact tests and logistic regression. Based on the results of NORDIC questionnaires highest prevalence was 50.9% in knee, wrist and lower body (37.7%) and shoulder (31.2%), respectively. Musculoskeletal Disorders had significant association of the neck, with age, the shoulder with age and education level, elbow and experience with - education - body mass index, wrist and age with - experience - education level, body mass index, the upper back with age - Index BMI, body mass index, the knee with level of education with (p-value <0.05). Factors affecting the incidence of musculoskeletal disorders include prolonged labor, tools, inadequate and unsafe posture and manual handling. The prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in the construction industry is high. Awkward posture, high BMI and high weight objects are that factor the managers must consider all them to reduce the incidence of musculoskeletal disorders at construction sit.
