Journal Title: Stanley Medical Journal - Year 2015, Vol 2, Issue 4
Abstract
Background: Basic life support (BLS) is a core skill in which all healthcare professionals should be proficient. It is logical to provide BLS training during undergraduate years ensuring basic competence in all graduating healthcare students. Previous surveys of medical and dental schools have highlighted deficiencies in BLS training. Objectives: To study about the awareness about Basic Life Support among medical students in Chennai and to compare the knowledge about BLS among second year, pre-final year, final year MBBS students, CRRI and Post Graduates. Methods & materials: This cross sectional study was carried out among randomly selected 456 medical students including second year, pre final year, and final year MBBS students, CRRI and Post Graduates from August 2015 to November 2015. Pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data. Results: Among 456 responders in this cross sectional study, 227 (49.78%) were second MBBS, 117(25.66%) were third MBBS, 45 (9.87%) were final MBBS, 35 (7.68%) were CRRIs, 32 (7.02%) were PGs. The adequate knowledge about BLS was considered when the students scored more than 40%. Pre-clinical students (second and third years) 20.9% have lesser knowledge than the clinical students 42.5% (final year and CRRI). Conclusion: This study found that there is lack of adequate knowledge about BLS among undergraduate medical students. The major lack of knowledge is due to lack of training. But the students are interested in learning BLS if it is made as a part of curriculum. Hence it is essential to train the students from undergraduate level to make them competent
