STUDY ON CHINA’S EXPORT POTENTIAL TO CENTRAL ASIA IN THE BACKGROUND OF THE BELT AND ROAD INITIATIVE (BRI)

Abstract
In the context of COVID-19, international trade has been strongly affected, and it is of great importance to accelerate trade with countries along with the “Belt and Road Initiative” to achieve business transformation. This thesis uses the gravity model to measure export potential based on data from China and Central Asia from 2008 to 2018. In this thesis, we estimate the differences to examine the BRI’s effect on China’s export potential to Central Asia and other BRI countries along the Belt and Road routes. The results show that China’s export potential to Central Asian countries increased significantly after the initiative, especially for product exports in capital-intensive industries. We also distinguished between different regions and saw a much stronger effect for the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian and West Asian Nations.
