STUDY ON IN BLOOD CHEMISTRY CHANGES INDUCED BY VARIOUS EXERTIONS IN MAŁE VOLLEYBALL PLAYER WHO SUFFERS FROM EPISODIC MUSCLE CRAMPS. A CASE STUDY

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2009, Vol 25, Issue 3

Abstract

Background. Elitę małe volleyball player, who suffers from incidental muscle cramps was sub-jected to the study on changes selected blood parameters induced by three various exertions: labo-ratory graded exercise test, a typical training session and an international volleyball tournament. Materiał and methods. Blood was sampled prior and after each of three exertions undergone wi-thin 2-week period on a separated day in a order as follows: laboratory exercise (LE) of graded inten-sity until refusal (5 bouts x 3 minutes) on cycloergometer, training session (TS) lasting 2h, and offi-cial, 4-sets volleyball match (VM) of high standing, lasting 90 min. LE were performed within 10:00-12:00 am, TS and VM took place in the afternoon (17:30-19:00). Blood parameters detected in the samples were as follows: urea (U), glucose (GLU), hormones: cortisol (C), testosterone (T), T/C ratio, growth hormone (HGH), DHEA-S, enzymes: CK, GOT, GPT, electrolytes: Na*, K*, Mg*2, Ca*2, lactate (La) and post-exertion relative plasma volume changes. Results. LE brought about the higher rises of LA, HGH and T, while Glu, U and electrolytes re-mained unchanged. End-VM LA level was below 2.5 mmol/L and K* and Mg*2 dropped below Iower li-mits (3.5 and 0.5 mmol/L respectively), T/C x100 ratio decreased from 7.7 to 3.7, mainly due to mar-ked rise of C, set-to-set GLU fluctuated from 7.1 to 4.2 mmol/L and U was the highest (7.9 mmol/L). Conclusions. The magnitudes of end-VM changes in U, T/C ratio and K* and Mg*2 indicated the bio-logical cost of participation into VM as very high, but that does not elucidate history of muscle cramps.
