Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2013, Vol 26, Issue 9
Abstract
Introduction. Consequences of cancer in a child affect all members of the family system. Being the closest source of support, parents must employ coping strategies in order to participate effectively in the treatment process of a child. Individual styles of coping preferred by parents of child with cancer are determined by the levels of anxiety. A group of 60 parental dyads of children with cancer participated in the study. The study was conducted at the Department of Paediatric Oncology, Haematology, and Bone Marrow Transplantation in Wrocław in the years 2010-2011. Time elapsed from diagnosis was one month. Methods used: Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and the author’s questionnaire. This article presents the results of a study in a group of 12 parents (6 dyads) preferring task-oriented (SSZ) and emotion-oriented approach (SSE).Results. Parents preferring SSZ and SSE displayed cohesion, adequate communication and adaptability. Level of state anxiety was high, whereas score for trait anxiety was at medium level. In addition, parents were found to actively seek social support and be capable of taking advantage of it.Conclusions.
