Surface adsorption of selected wood species represented different type of structure

Abstract

Surface adsorption of selected wood species represented different type of structure. Chosen for the purpose of the research wood species from Africa, South America and Europe are primarily used as a flooring and construction material. These products are often directly exposed to water. In this work the surface adsorption of wood was studied. The highest value of the surface adsorption 732 g/m2 was stated for the pine sapwood, and the lowest value 112 g/m2 for African mahogany wood. The surface adsorption of European oak with the ringporous structure was lower than the water adsorption of wood of tropical species i.e. afzelia, tauari, courbaril with diffuse-porous structure. The surface adsorption depends primarily on whether it takes place through the heartwood or sapwood. In the comparison between the analysed wood species, their density was of secondary importance and to a lesser extent was affecting the value of the surface adsorption.
