SURVEILLANCE OF DRUG UTILIZATION PATTERN AND PRACTICES DURING PREGNANCY IN WOMENATTENDING ANTE-NATAL CLINIC: A PHARMACOEPIDEMIOLOGICAL STUDY FROM ATERTIARY CARE TEACHING INSTITUTION

Abstract

To evaluate the drug utilization pattern and practices during pregnancy in women attending ante-natal clinic of a tertiary care teaching institution of western Uttar Pradesh.An additional objective was to find out relation of women's education with various parameters related to drug use during pregnancy. About 202 pregnant women were interviewed. CategoryAdrugs constituted 54.57%, 86.99% and 41.11%, categoryBconstituted 27.14%, 9.37% and 37.5% and categoryDconstituted 6%, 0.19% and 14.14% of the drugs used during the first, second and third trimester of pregnancy respectively. Self-medication, homeopathic/ herbal drugs, women having knowledge about contraceptives, use of IFA and Calcium during pregnancy, women attending more than five antenatal visits were used more in literate, than in illiterate subjects (p<0.001).
