Susceptibility Pattern of Various Azoles Against Candida Species Causing Vulvovaginal Candidiasis
Journal Title: Journal of Medical Research and Practice - Year 2017, Vol 6, Issue 2
Abstract
ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Objective Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is a common gynecological infection. Although there are many effective antifungal drugs used as topical and systemic therapy, resistance to them is not uncommon. This study aims at identifying the causative species and determining their susceptibility to different azoles. Methods A total of 350 female patients with clinical features of VVC were included. Specimens after culture were identified and subjected to susceptibility testing against various azoles by the disk-diffusion method. Results VVC was detected in 20.5% cases. The commonest infecting species was Candida albicans (81.5%). Candida glabrata was the commonest among non-albican species (57%). Susceptibility testing reveals 91% susceptibility against C. albicans. Non-albicans offer resistance against azoles. Conclusion C. albicans was the major infecting species and fluconazole can be used as an empirical therapy in VVC. In recurrent cases, non-azoles must be used.
