Abstract

The custom of choosing saints as patrons for persons or social groups dates back to the first centuries of Christianity. Today we are witnessing a return to this tradition. Choosing Saint Hedwig of Silesia as the patron saint of towns, schools, charitable works, is an example of this phenomenon. The article entitled Saint Hedwig as a patroness of a town shows the ecclesiastical standards currently in force concerning choosing patrons. They include three essential elements. The first is associated with the choice of a particular patron (electio). The second is an affirmation of the choice by the competent Church authority (approbatio). The final approval of the patron saint (the third element) lies in the competence of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. Then the legislative process associated with the choice of Saint Hedwig of Silesia as the patron saint of the towns: Dębica, Nowogrodziec, Trzebnica and Wleń is discussed.
