Symbolic meanings of the blood lexeme in the biblical text

Abstract

The necessity of studying the symbolic paradigm of the Bible in the linguocultural aspect is due primarily to the affirmation of the Ukrainian language in the realm of the sacral, and the theoretical substantiation of its ability to exaggerate the high spiritual truths. The objectivation of symbols in the biblical picture of the world makes it possible to identify their pragmatic, cognitological, archetypal and axiological parameters, highlighting at the same time the national-cultural content, and its specificity as well. The article deals with the features of the functioning of the biblical linguistic symbol of the blood lexeme, as well as its derivatives, which are implemented within various syntactic constructions. The Old Testament is characterized by the following symbolic meanings for the blood lexeme (of animals): a symbol of life, purification of the body (with sacrifices), a symbol of the will between God and Moses. The blood lexeme (of a human) in the context combinations under consideration implements the meaning of 'innocent death / murder', 'death / murder of the righteous / saints', 'a fair man', 'blood revenge', 'murder', 'feeling of guilt' (reproof of conscience), 'murder / kill'. In the New Testament, in the structure of syntactic constructions, the blood lexeme symbolizes the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ in the name of human reconciliation with God, in the name of its salvation and eternal life. It also acts as a symbol of bloodshed, correlating with the symbols of war (fire), devastation (smoke), water as a symbol of the baptism of Jesus Christ, the spirit as the grace of the Holy Ghost.
