SYMBOLISM OF SACRED IMAGE: FEATURES AND POSSIBILITIES OF FORMAL ANALYSIS

Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of artistic form in visual sacred art at the point of its own pure symbolism which provides the special or exclusive expressiveness of the sacred images and let us identify them exactly as the sacred ones. And this concerns not only aesthetic effects or cultural, spiritual meanings of the sacred images, though it is certainly important, but mainly the way of formation of the universal artistic language that is able to speak about the unspeakable, to find a form for something having no form. The formal analysis of this language basic elements and constructive principles gives an opportunity to find out the inner valuable motives of sacred images symbolism. The analysis of iconographic status of certain constructive elements (especially: vertical, horizontal and cross in the construction of christian cathedrals), composition features, visual or plastic modes reveals the resources of the artistic form intensity.
