MEMORY AND OBLIVION IN THE SPACE OF THE CITY

Abstract

The article is devoted to the problems related to commemorative practices in the city space. The search for identity is also linked with history and the past, and the destruction and loss of identity, respectively, should be associated with oblivion. City as a complex, open, non-linear system is an ideal object for interdisciplinary researching, including the intellectual context of urban history, i.e. historical urbanistics. Urban history was based on a contextual approach, one of the many variants of the system approach. It proposed the understanding of the city as an element of social ties and cultural specificity (subsystem) of states, societies, civilizations and the system of city has a variety of functions (strategic, economic, organizational, etc.). In Ukraine both urban history and, in general, urban studies and memory-studies are becoming promising integrative areas of researching. The purpose of this article is an attempt to reveal some aspects of historical urbanism, the correlation of memory and oblivion, to compare two types of appeal to the past, to memory and oblivion. All of these proposed on the material of Odessa. The Ukrainian public project «The Last Address» is aimed to create a community of people whose highest values are life and human dignity. It redirects us to the newest practices of overcoming oblivion and preserving the memory of the tragic past on the city space under the slogan «One name, one life, one sign». The project «The Last Address» saves from oblivion the names of ordinary victims of political repressions.
