Symetria w nowelach Bolesława Prusa
Journal Title: Wiek XIX. Rocznik Towarzystwa Literackiego im. Adama Mickiewicza - Year 2014, Vol 0, Issue
Abstract
Symmetry in Bolesław Prus’ Short Stories The critics depicted the short stories by Bolesław Prus as heteronymous texts, in which different genres were mixed. Some scholars (A. Labuda, A. Martuszewska, I. Opacki Z. Szweykowski) emphasized the compositional order of those texts. The article shows that the form of Prus’ stories is constantly based on the repetition of words, motifs and events. The basic repetitions include: the frame of the beginning and the end, the doubling of the theme and/or motif, as well as a symmetry of structure. The theory of novels, presented by Prus in his manuscript, is an algebraic and geometric model. In his stories Prus uses this theory in practice. The chaos of composition is ostensible; the form of the stories is in fact based on the depth of symmetry and repetition. Prus’ stories are complex genres which absorb simple genres. Symmetry is the category which describes these relations in the most direct way.
