Sympathetic Activity and Meditation-Gender Based Variability

Journal Title: Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology Advances - Year 2014, Vol 4, Issue 12

Abstract

The current study was done to see the gender variability in the sympathetic activity as a result of Rajyoga Meditation. For this study we selected 50 participants, 27 males and 23 females in age group 25 to 60 years, performing Rajyoga meditation on a regular basis for the past 2-3 years from Brahma Kumari Ashram. Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) function tests using Polyrite medicare system were conducted. The autonomic insufficiency was ruled out in all. Sympathetic activity of ANS was compared by Galvanic skin resistance (GSR), Cold pressor response (CPR) and Hand grip test. The results were statistically analyzed in each group and valid conclusions were drawn. The results found that sympathetic nervous system tests depicted statistically significant rise in GSR in females as compared to males, even though the rest of the Sympathetic nervous system tests were comparable. This work represents more psychophysiological relaxation in the females as a result of Rajyoga meditation which is an important step in the convergence of multiple realms of research by linking physiological measures with indicators of individual belief systems.
