Journal Title: Мова - Year 2015, Vol 0, Issue 24
Abstract
The object of our article is the peculiarities of syntactic structure of the texts of Ukrainian folk riddles. The subject of our research is the specific features of syntactic connections and component structure of the sentences. The purpose of the given article is to characterize the types of sentences employed in Ukrainian folk riddles. To achieve the purpose of our research we have used such methods as observation, description, quantitative method of calculation and inductive generalization. The analysis of the selected material (246 riddles) has led us to the following conclusion: simple sentences are more frequent than composite sentences, which makes the expression of thought more laconic, because the main characteristics of riddles are specificity and laconism. One-member sentences are quite frequent among simple sentences. As for composite sentences, the most frequent are sentences whose clauses are connected without any conjunctions. Complex sentences are quite rare. Predicative clauses of compound sentences are mostly connected with the help of Ukrainian conjunction «а». There are also composite sentences with different types of connection. Thus, riddles as a special text in the laconic form of a question or verse which depicts speech hidden objects or phenomena with the help of different speech figures are an interesting source for research in the syntactic aspect of analysis.
