Synthesis, spectroscopic characterisation, antimicrobial and larvicidal studies of some transition metal complexes derived from tetradentate Schiff base ligand
Journal Title: Journal of Pharmacy Research - Year 2011, Vol 4, Issue 12
Abstract
In the present work the Schiff base ligand was synthesised by condensation of 2,6-diaminopyridine with salicylaldehyde in 1:2 molar ratio to give N,N’-bis (salicylidene)-2,6- diaminopyridine (H 2 L).The transition metal complexes of Cu(II), Zn(II) , Ni(II) and Mn(II) were prepared by using the metal salts and the synthesised Schiff base ligand in 1:1 molar ratio. The transition metal complexes were characterized by molar conductivity, UV-Visible, IR, ESR spectra and screened for bactericidal, fungicidal and larvicidal activities. The UV and IR spectral analyses suggest that the ligand behaves as dibasic tetradentate ligand with N 2 O 2 donor atoms. The lower molar conductivity values suggested the non-electrolytic nature of the complexes. The results revealed that the synthesized compounds were showing good antimicrobial activity. The larvicidal activity data emphasis that the metal complexes were more potent than the free Schiff base ligand against the A.subpictus and C.tritaeniorhynchus.
