Toxicological Effect of Kerosene Contaminated Diet on the Lipid Profile of Albino Rats
Journal Title: Journal of Pharmacy Research - Year 2010, Vol 3, Issue 2
Abstract
This research work was undertaken to investigate the effect of kerosene on the lipid profile parameters which include total cholesterol (CHO), high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), and triglyceride (TG). The toxicological implications of exposure to diet contaminated with kerosene through oral administration to a normal adult Wistar albino rats were clinically investigated after Week 1 and Week 2 intervals. The mean values of total cholesterol, LDL, and TG in the test groups as compared with the levels for the normal control group indicated significant increase (P<0.05) while the mean level of HDL significantly decreased (P<0.05) in both Weeks 1 and 2. Therefore, the results of this work suggest that frequent exposure to kerosene-contaminated food, water, and air resulting from oil spillage and gas flaring can lead to abnormal function of organ in the body such as liver and adipose tissues.
