Journal Title: Journal of Pharmacy Research - Year 2011, Vol 4, Issue 9
Abstract
Both Ayurveda and Siddha systems of medicine in India are complementary to each other in contributing towards the healthcare of human society. But the greatest lacuna existing in these systems is lack of proper standards for the drugs to be used in formulations. Hence the need of the hour is to carry out systematic standardization studies on herbal drugs. Mi c r o s c o p i c a l me t h o d s are necessary to establish the botanical identity of commercial samples of herbal drugs source and in checking adulteration and substitution. In the present work, one of the sources of a controversial drug of siddha system of medicine “SIVANARVEMBU” is studied from the microscopic standardization point of view so as to contribute towards the filling up of the lacuna existing in the drug identification. Selected source of the present study is Justicia tranquebarensis L. belonging to the family Acanthaceae. The microscopic standards determined in the present work could be highly useful in deciding the genuiness of the drug.
