System kolejowy w Melbourne i okolicy oraz jego rola w strukturze przestrzennej miasta

Abstract
This article describes the Melbourne rail system, which consists primarily of suburban and regional lines, complemented by interstates. The text provides a brief historical outline and characteristics of the system along with its specific features, such as the partly underground Melbourne’s City Loop. It also draws attention to the important role that railway plays in the city, which is not only a transport function. Significance in the spatial structure of the city is also the importance of stations or train stops themselves. The publication also describes plans for the future development of the system, which respond to the challenges facing a thriving city.
