Systematic Evaluation of Antiulcer Activity of Herbal Formulation ‘Chandanasava’ in Rats
Journal Title: Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Disease - Year 2012, Vol 2, Issue 0
Abstract
Objective: To evaluate three formulations of ‘Chandanasava’ [commercially made by Baidyanath, Dabur and test (prepared in-house)] for anti-ulcer activity. Methods: The activity was evaluated in Albino wistar rats against ethanol induced, aspirin induced, cold restraint induced and pylorus ligation induced gastric ulcer models. The formulations were administered orally at the dose of 6 ml/kg. Results: The percentage inhibition of ulcer formation in the ethanol induced ulcer model 66.51%, 74.76% and 78.85% respectively, in the aspirin induced ulcer model 78.30%, 72.30% and 68.69% respectively; in cold restraint stress ulcer model 78.57%, 76.28% and 73.85% respectively for Baidyanath, Dabur and test formulations. Further, the pylorus ligated rats treated with Chandanasava exhibited significantly (P < 0.001) decreased ulcer lesions, gastric volume, and total acidity. It was found to prevent the ulceration by increasing the pH and mucus secretion in pylorus ligated rats. Conclusions: The formulations of ‘Chandanasava’ possess significant antiulcer activity in variety of preclinical models and should be further evaluated to substantiate the findings.
